Billy and Johnny Live in San Francisco…

In February we posted the Billy & Johnny interview in which Billy and Johnny Marr talk about their friendship since school days in Wythenshawe, Manchester in the 1970s. One of the things discussed was the fact that they’d never played live together despite the years of friendship and having done a couple of recordings together. Well that all changed this week!

On April 13th whist playing his gig at the Fillmore in San Francisco Johnny invited Billy to join him onstage as his special guest for two songs. The first was a storming version of ‘I fought the law’, the 1958 classic by The Crickets’ Sonny Curtis popularized by the Bobby Fuller Four and most famously The Clash.

The second song they played together on the night was ‘How Soon Is Now’ which is probably the most famous song by Johnny’s band The Smiths.

On the night Billy was accompanied by his pal Edward Kemper. That gave Ed access to be able to grab behind the scenes photos of Billy and Johnny which he has kindly shared here exclusively for billyduffy.com. Not only that but Ed shot footage from the stage side of both songs, so watch to see Billy and Johnny genuinely having a great time on stage and sharing a post gig hug!
